10 Things to Check before Renting an Apartment

Moving into a new apartment can be exciting but renting an apartment can be a tedious task.  Even if you are lucky enough to have found the perfect place, don’t get carried away.

Here are a few important things to keep in mind before you rent that apartment:

1. Security. Make sure the apartment is full proof. Check for locks, bolts and look out for any soft spots that can invite burglars. Get a security camera/video phone installed to be on the safer side.


2. Cleanliness. When you inspect the apartment you want to rent, one of the most important things to check is cleanliness. Make sure the paint is not peeling, the drainage is working and there is no trash lying around the apartment


3. Floors and walls. The first thing you notice when you walk into the apartment is the floor and the walls. Check for any kind of damage to the flooring and ceiling. Check for broken tiles in the kitchen and the bathroom too.


4. Storage. Any place without ideal storage space loses its value. Check if there cabinets and cupboards in the house and assess them according to your storage needs. Check hinges and make sure they are in working condition.


5. Ventilation. A well-ventilated house is not just healthy but safe as well. Windows play a huge role in ventilation of the house and it can be a health hazard if they do not open. Make sure at least one window opens in each room of the apartment; check for broken hinges and glass panes on the windows.


6. Basic amenities. The most basic things to check in a new apartment are electricity and water. Check all the switch boards, plugs and make sure there is no electricity leakage. Also check about regular water supply.


7. Bathroom. Bathrooms are the life line of any apartment. Check for all the basic amenities in a bathroom, make sure the flush works fine and there is no leakage.


8. Kitchen. A fully equipped kitchen can add value to your rental experience. But kitchen utilities differ from apartment to apartment. Make sure you discuss this before moving in. Check if the stove works fine and that there no gas leakage.


9. Pest infestation. This is the grossest and the most critical part of apartment inspection. Look for any signs of pest infestation, be it termites, cockroaches, mice etc., and rectify the issue as soon as possible.


10. Fire safety. Safety against fire can be very essential in an apartment. Check for smoke detectors especially, in the kitchen. Look up the fire exit, if there is one.
