11 Ways to Ring in the New Year in Style at Home

New Year’s Eve is time to party. But the massive crowds outside don’t bode well for celebrations. Why not spend time at home sweet home and ring in 2015 the best way you can?

1. Things to do in the evening: Make a memory board of 2014, create a time capsule (till next year) or a bucket list for 2015.

2. Play 20 Questions on the year that was. Use the questions to reflect on the last 365 days. Great for families and friends.

3. How about taking some time out to write a letter to yourself? Get those thoughts flowing and pen a piece to your future self in 2015.

4. Throw an impromptu party for close friends. Make it a BYOA (Bring Your Own Appetiser) shindig to make things easier on you.

5. Ask guests to write predictions for the New Year when they come in. Read them at dessert or coffee time to wrap up the night.

6. Create a countdown clock. A cookie for each hour works well – and can be gobbled up by an adult or child.

7. Plan a treasure hunt. Squirrel away new year-related stuff like a party hat, streamers, a champagne flute, a Happy New Year card, drink stirrers, coasters, a calendar, or bells to ring in the New Year.

8. Welcome the New Year the way the Spaniards do. With grapes at midnight! Thread 12 grapes on a skewer for each guest and serve in lovely champagne flute.

9. Toast 2015 with champagne sangria at midnight. The making is easy-peasy: Mix 500ml apple juice, 250ml cranberry juice, one cup of orange juice and a bottle of champagne. Decorate with fruit slices and serve.

10. A midnight supper really hits the spot after the New Year’s here. Set out a make your own baked potato bar. Offer toppings like shredded cheese, sour cream, bacon bits, chopped scallions, salsa, olives, jalapenos, chives, steamed broccoli, mushrooms, chili flakes, oregano, and serve crusty bread on the side).

11. Dessert can be a simple affair. No one will turn down cake/gulab jamuns/gajar halwa and ice cream. Follow up with hot and strong coffee.

Hit the bed, dreaming of all the bright tomorrows that 2015 will bring!
