12 Tips to Ensure Optimal Wellness

Are you feeling well?

You get asked that question a lot but have you really wondered what being well means?

The World Health Organisation terms wellness as a “state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. So wellness isn’t only about physical health; it encompasses a range of dimensions – emotional, spiritual, occupational, environmental, financial, intellectual and social.

Wellness is all about mind, body, and soul. Maintaining an optimal level of wellness is essential to lead a high-quality life. Wellness matters, because everything we do and every emotion we feel relates to our well-being.

How do you set your routine to ensure optimal wellness day after day?

1. Begin your day with a huge mug of water with lemon and honey every morning.

2. Start right by doing 30-45 minutes of exercise on an empty stomach. This will reduce elevated morning cortisol levels and burn extra body fat.

3. Don’t skip breakfast. If you don’t have time for the whole routine, go with a banana smoothie and a handful of dried fruit.

4. At work, keep taking short breaks (to ensure no nonstop staring at the screen), and walk around.

5. A 1.5l bottle on your work desk is a good idea. Fill it at the start of the day and aim to finish it by end of day.

6. Snack on high-protein items when you feel the craving to eat. Never miss your mind-morning and afternoon snack. Studies show people who eat four times per day enjoy greater weight loss and avoid blood-sugar highs and lows.

7. Weed out negativity from your life. Be it toxic colleagues, friends, or family, banish them slowly.

8. Eat your dinner before 8pm to avoid weight gain. What should your dinner plate have? Fibrous carbs, salad, and lots of veggies. And yes, protein!

9. Get in some me-time before you go to bed. This is essential to wind down before bed and lets you collect your thoughts.

11. Sleep in a darkened room for optimal recovery and to maximise the release of melatonin and growth hormone. Seven to eight hours is good.

12. Try and sign up for some volunteer work over the weekend. Giving and helping will make you feel extremely good about yourself – a prerequisite for wellness.
