5 DIY Natural Home Fragrances to Try Today

If you’re one of those who abhors toxic load in the home, what are you doing with store-bought air fresheners and paraffin candles? Go the natural way and make your own air-freshening sprays and perfumes. These recipes are simple, cheap and leave your home smelling ah-so-good!

1. Oil diffusers. All you need is a narrow vase, baby oil, essential oil of your choice, bamboo skewers (or rattan diffusing sticks and some ribbon. Add about 20-25 drops of the oil to the vase and then top it with baby oil. Slip in the skewers and pretty them up with a ribbon. The oil will diffuse into the room up through the skewers.

2. Cinnamon candles. These look great and the gentle scent puts you in the mood for some baked goodies. Oatmeal cinnamon cookies, anyone? You need a pillar candle, cinnamon sticks, scissor and a strong glue/hot glue gun. Cut cinnamon sticks to the candle’s size. Run glue along cinnamon stick and stick it on to the candle’s side. Keep adding sticks till the candle’s sides are covered. Add a ribbon to the centre and light up.

3. Citrus fragrance spray. Citrusy smells are always appealing, especially when they’re fresh. Get together a couple of lemons/lime, an orange, a bit of vodka and water. Put the peels in a bowl and add vodka till they are covered. Let sit overnight. The vodka causes the oils in the peels to diffuse. Pour the peels-and-vodka mix into a spray bottle. The vodka should be about ¼ of the bottle. Fill up with water, shake and spray.

4. Essential oil spray. This one’s an easy DIY. Get together a spray bottle, distilled water, essential oil (lavender, lemon, rosemary, cinnamon, cranberry). Drop about 20 drops of essential oil in the bottom of a squirt bottle. You can go solo or experiment when it comes to the oils. Lemon and lavender, lavender and rosemary, lemon and rosemary, and rosemary and cinnamon work well together. Fill the rest of the bottle with distilled water. You’re all set with an awesome-smelling DIY spray.

5. Lemon-basil linen spray. Lemon and basil together create an amazing aroma. You need 1 ¼ cup of water (divided into 3/4 cup and 1/2 cup), 4 tablespoons of dried basil, a strainer, funnel, a tablespoon of vodka and 5 drops of lemon essential oil. In a small pot, bring 1/2 cup water to boil. Add the basil and let steep for a few minutes. In another pot, bring 3/4 cups of water to a boil. Line the funnel with the strainer and place funnel in the spray bottle. Pour in the steeped basil-water mixture. Add the boiling water, vodka, and essential oil. And shake it all about!
