7 Natural DIY Ways to Keep Mosquitoes Away

It was in 1897 that Sir Ronald Ross identified a tropical species as the vector for the deadly malaria. Since then, humans have been at loggerheads with the mosquito, looking for ways to keep them off their homes and bodies. We tell you how you can do this naturally. Bye-bye chemicals, bye-bye mosquitoes!

1. Home-made citronella candles. Citronella essential oil is known as one of the most effective natural mosquito repellents in the world. Add a few drops of this oil to a home-made natural candle (all you need is wax, citronella oil, wick, a jar and a double boiler). Place around the verandah or inside your living room, light up and keep the bugs away.
2. All-natural bug spray. Try the “Bug Off” spray devised by Stevie from Mix 4 drops citronella essential oil, 4 drops lemongrass essential oil, 4 drops rosemary essential oil, 4 drops eucalyptus essential oil, 4 drops mint essential oil and 1/4 cup pure witch hazel in a small plastic atomiser. Shake well and apply liberally.
3. Lavender oil. We all love lavender oil, but mosquitoes are repelled by it. Dab a few drops onto your curtains when you open your windows. The insects will think twice before entering. Or else, add a few drops to two tablespoons of vegetable oil, such as olive or coconut, and rub onto exposed skin. Mosquitoes will stay far from you all evening!
4. Neem oil. If you can get your hands on some neem oil, nothing like it. The oil from the “tree of life” works wonders on mosquitoes – wonders for you not the bugs. Apply onto skin or dab onto a ribbon and tie on the balcony railing/window bar.
5. Thyme spray. Thyme oil is one of the best at providing protection naturally when it comes to repelling malarial mosquitoes. For a homemade brew, combine four drops of thyme oil to every teaspoon of base oil, such as olive or jojoba oil. For a spray, mix five drops of thyme oil with 2 ounces of water.
6. Studded beauty. Slice two limes and stud them liberally with cloves. Add this to your tablescape, be it outside or inside, when entertaining. A sure-shot way to keep the mosquitoes away.
7. Hello rose. Plant a few rose geraniums around your home. Make them a part of the garden or simply put in plants around the home, verandah or patio. The plant is a natural mosquito repellent – you can’t do better than this!
