Create a Zen Vibe with Water Features

By Sagar Datta

Water…the elixir of life!

Incorporating moving water into the home has a dramatic influence. For a water feature is an installation that can create a wonderfully soothing ambience. The most relaxing fountains make a gurgling sound, akin to a brook or stream. They also change the temperature and humidity of nearby air, creating a tactile experience.

Fountains, pools and ponds have long been considered a wonderful way to add an edge to your outdoor space. But the presence of water isn’t seen as a good thing by most of us. Leaky pipes, anyone? But it’s time to rethink the indoor water feature.

Yes, it’s a great way to get a Zen vibe. But think of it as an impressive focal point that makes everything else in the room seem more luxurious.

Where all can you install a water feature?

* Below the staircase. Instead of tiled patterns or a monotone wall, try a waterfall concept and supplement it with gorgeous lighting.

* Don’t have a lot of space in your home or outside? Add a standing water feature. If money’s no constraint, try mother of pearl inlays. If you’re on a budget, stick to a sculptural stone or tile setup.

* If you really want to impress guests, install a floor-to-ceiling waterfall. It just might get a little hard to hear one another.

* Incorporate some greenery and you’ve got yourself an awesome hangout spot.

* Add a modern fountain in your drawing room in an empty spot instead of going for the regular wooden partitions or funky art installation.

* What can you do outside? Try the modern, classic or old English styles. Modern garden spaces that are minimalistic look good with Asian-inspired water features made from natural substances. Accessorise the space with grasses and bamboo.

In case you only have a patio or balcony, look for a design that can be used in a corner or on a table. Small fountains and ponds made up of concentric vases are extremely space efficient.

You can even try a DIY fountain. It isn’t all that tough!

Water features look even more beautiful when the rays of the sun bounce off the water. It gives the impression that you are bonding with nature, while being caressed by light. In some cultures, this is thought to be the link with the spiritual world; in others, water is one of the sacred five elements and having it close means living with the blessing of the gods. If you want to bring more life into the ponds and fountains in the back yard, add a few fish. While koi fish will need a fairly large amount of space for them to swim around in, gold fish work just as well and are a lot more affordable for smaller ponds.
