Things to Do with Vinegar

For thousands of years, vinegar has been used across the world – as a cooking ingredient, a curative, a cleaner and much more. From ancient Rome, to early China and the Middle East, vinegar has been valued for its medicinal and cleaning qualities. Are you giving this humble kitchen ingredient the credit it deserves? We tell you what all you can do with that bottle nestled away in a cabinet.

  1. Clean your gadgets – computer, printer, fax machine, and other stuff – with a 50-50 solution of vinegar and water. Wipe clean, never spray.

  2. Use the 50-50 solution to erase ballpoint pen marks from walls or wooden furniture.

  3. Sharpen your scissors by wiping them down with vinegar and wiping them dry. Never use water to clean them – it may lead to rusting.

  4. Spray a 50-50 solution on furniture and carpets after a party to banish odours of all kinds.

  5. As a rinse after shampooing hair if you live in an area with really hard water.

  6. Clean window blinds super-fast by wiping them clean after you dip a gloved hand into a 50-50 solution of vinegar and water.

  7. Remove water rings from furniture by mixing equal parts vinegar and olive oil and apply it with a soft cloth.

  8. Freshen a musty closet by wiping down the interior with a cloth dampened in a solution of 1 cup vinegar and 1/4 cup baking soda diluted in a bottle of water.

  17. Use vinegar to periodically clean out soap scum and disinfect your washing machine by pouring in 2 cups vinegar, and running the machine through a full cycle without any clothes or detergent.

  18. Bring the white back into your whites by letting yellowed garments soak overnight in a solution of 12 parts warm water to one part vinegar.

  19. Remove a fresh grease stain from a suede skirt, jacket or shoes. simply brush it with a soft toothbrush dipped in white vinegar.

  20. Soak dried-up and ready-to-toss synthetic-bristle paintbrushes in full-strength white vinegar until the paint dissolves and the bristles are soft and pliable. Wash in hot soapy water for brand new brushes.

  21. Get your shower stall sparkling clean by wiping it down with a cloth dipped in a solution of 1/2 cup white vinegar, 1 cup ammonia, and 1/4 cup baking soda mixed in 1 gallon warm water.
